CARESS
Healthcare organizations are increasingly introducing AI and robotic systems. While technical performance and regulatory compliance receive significant attention, organizations often lack practical support to prepare for responsible adoption. CARESS aims to develop an integrated Governance Readiness framework that helps healthcare organizations assess, develop and strengthen their readiness for implementing AI and robotics responsibly. The project combines governance, ethics, organizational readiness and practical innovation tools to support safer and more sustainable technology adoption. We are looking for partners from healthcare, AI, robotics, UX and implementation science to co-create and validate the concept.

B. Description du projet
1. Buts / objectifs du projet
The objective of CARESS is to develop and validate an innovative Governance Readiness approach that helps healthcare organizations prepare for the responsible adoption of AI and robotics. The project aims to support organizations in assessing their current level of readiness, identifying governance gaps, and guiding organizational development before and during implementation. Through collaboration with healthcare professionals, researchers and technology experts, CARESS will evolve into a practical framework that enables safer, more sustainable and human-centred innovation in healthcare. Rather than focusing on technology alone, CARESS focuses on the readiness of organizations to successfully and responsibly integrate AI and robotics into everyday healthcare practice.
2. État de l’art de votre concept
AI governance frameworks, digital health maturity models and emerging AI readiness assessments provide valuable guidance for governance, compliance and digital transformation in healthcare. However, they often focus on regulatory, technical or organizational aspects separately. CARESS explores the hypothesis that healthcare organizations would benefit from a practical and integrated Governance Readiness approach that combines governance, ethics, organizational development and responsible adoption throughout the implementation journey.
3. Plan de votre travail
- A – Défi à relever / problème à résoudre / besoin à remplir Healthcare organizations need practical ways to prepare for the responsible adoption of AI and robotics. Existing approaches often address governance, technology or regulation separately, while implementation requires an integrated organizational perspective.
- B – Idée / Solution envisagée Co-create and develop CARESS, a Governance Readiness framework that supports organizations in assessing, strengthening and guiding their readiness for responsible AI and robotics adoption.
- C – Activités planifiées au cours du projet
- Co-design and validate the CARESS framework with healthcare professionals, researchers, AI experts and future users.
- Develop the first version of the Governance Readiness framework.
- Explore practical tools such as a Governance Canvas, readiness assessment and implementation guidance.
- Identify pilot partners for testing and future validation in healthcare organizations.
- D - Infrastructures / collaborations / ressources disponibles utiles au projet
The project seeks collaboration with healthcare providers, researchers, AI and robotics experts, implementation scientists, UX specialists and innovation partners. The HE-ARCathon provides an ideal environment to build an interdisciplinary team and further develop the concept.
4. Aspects innovants de votre technologie / solution / concept
CARESS complements technology-centred and compliance-centred approaches by placing equal emphasis on organizational readiness for responsible AI adoption. Rather than focusing only on AI performance, regulatory compliance or technical implementation, CARESS brings together governance, ethics, organizational development and responsible adoption within one practical framework. CARESS bridges the gap between governance principles and practical implementation by supporting healthcare organizations from preparation and decision-making to successful adoption and continuous improvement. This integrated and human-centred perspective has the potential to translate existing governance and maturity approaches into practical organizational action.
5. Capacité envisagée à améliorer la qualité des soins
CARESS aims to improve the quality of care by supporting healthcare organizations in implementing AI and robotics safely, responsibly and effectively. Better organizational readiness can contribute to higher acceptance among healthcare professionals, improved patient safety, clearer governance structures and more sustainable technology adoption. Ultimately, this creates better conditions for AI and robotics to deliver meaningful benefits for patients, caregivers and healthcare organizations.
6. Impact potentiel sur l’économie ou l’efficience du système de santé
By helping healthcare organizations prepare for and manage the implementation of AI and robotics, CARESS has the potential to reduce costly implementation failures, improve investment decisions and increase the long-term value of digital health technologies. Better organizational readiness may also reduce project delays, strengthen stakeholder acceptance and support more efficient use of healthcare resources.
7. Plans futurs
The HE-ARCathon represents the starting point for building an interdisciplinary collaboration around CARESS. The next steps are to co-develop and validate the framework with healthcare organizations, researchers, AI and robotics experts, and implementation specialists through pilot projects. In the longer term, CARESS could evolve into an open methodology, digital toolkit and decision-support platform for responsible AI and robotics adoption in healthcare. The project also has the potential to contribute to future research, innovation and implementation initiatives and international collaboration on Governance Readiness and Responsible AI adoption. The long-term vision is to establish CARESS as an open, evidence-based Governance Readiness methodology for healthcare organizations.
